The Marangu route takes you through various ecosystems, including pagans, moorlands, and alpine deserts. The route offers ample opportunity for acclimatization, thereby guaranteeing the best chances of success. The highlight awaits you on the summit day when the hikers leave before sunrise to conquer Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, before triumphantly returning to Moshi. With experienced guides at the top and breathtaking views on every corner, this hike promises an incomparable experience of natural beauty and personal performance.

This itinerary enables adequate acclimatization, which is crucial for a successful summit attempt. Be sure to follow the instructions of your experienced guides and listen to your body throughout the trek. Enjoy the breathtaking views and incredible experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Detailed travel route

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi / Tanzania

They are picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or from Arusha and taken to Ameg Lodge or an accommodation of their choice in Moshi. Meet with your trekking guide for instruction and equipment review. Relax and prepare for the upcoming adventure.

Overnight: Ameg Lodge

Day 2: Moshi to the Marangu Gate to the Mandara hut

After breakfast drive from Moshi (915 m) to Marangu Gate (1,860 meters). Completion of the park formalities and start of the hike. Hike through the rainforest to the Mandara hut (2,740 meters).
Overnight in the Mandara hut.

Distance: 11 km
Difference in altitude: 840m
Duration: 4-5 hours

Day 3: Mandara hut to the Horombo hut

Leave the Mandara hut after breakfast. Hike through the rainforest, then into the heath and moor landscapes.
Arrival in the Horombo hut (3,690 meters).
Overnight in the Horombo hut.

Distance: 10 km
Difference in altitude: 950m
Duration: 5-6 hours

Day 4: Acclimatization day in the Horombo hut

Spend a day in the Horombo hut for acclimatization. Optional day hike to the Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi hut.

Relax and hydrate to prepare for higher heights.

Day 5: Horombo hut to the Kibo hut

Leave the Horombo hut and hike to the saddle. Ascent to the Kibo hut (4,695 meters), which is located at the foot of the Kibo summit cone. Prepare for the summit trial.
Early dinner and rest in the Kibo hut.

Distance: 10 km
Difference in altitude: 1005 m
Duration: 6-7 hours

Day 6: Summit day – Kibo hut to Uhuru Peak to the Horombo hut

Get up around midnight for a hot drink and a light snack. Start the summit attempt, climb steeply to Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters). Walk along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point in Africa. Return to the Kibo hut to rest briefly. Then it goes on to the Horombo hut for the night.

Route: 6 km uphill, 15 km downhill
Difference in altitude: 1200 m uphill, 2205 m downhill
Duration: 4-5 hours

Day 7: Horombo hut to the Marangu Gate

Descent from the Horombo hut through the rainforest.
Arrival at Marangu Gate (1830 m) and check out.
Transfer back to Moshi.
Solemn dinner and overnight in Moshi.

Distance: 11 km
Difference in altitude: 1865 m
Duration: 6 hours

Day 8: departure

After breakfast, they are picked up from the hotel and brought to either Arusha or the airport.
